Ethiopia Earns $1.35bn from Coffee Exports in First Half of 2025/26 Fiscal Year
Ethiopia generated $1.345 billion from coffee exports in the first half of the 2025/26 fiscal year, positioning the country for what could be a record-breaking annual performance, according to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.
Director General Shafi Omar has disclosed that approximately 200,000 metric tons of coffee have already been exported. The authority has set a total export target of 600,000 metric tons, a volume projected to yield $3 billion in revenue. This target represents an ambitious expansion upon the previous year’s performance, which saw 469,000 metric tons of coffee generating $2.65 billion.
The strong results were attributed to measures aimed at improving productivity and quality, expanding access to new markets, and strengthening sector oversight. Ethiopian coffee is now exported to 84 countries, reflecting broader market diversification.

A newly introduced digital traceability platform allows coffee to be tracked from farm to warehouse to exporter, enhancing transparency, compliance, and buyer confidence in global markets.
The authority also cited growing demand in East Asian markets, supported by targeted promotional campaigns. Efforts are underway to accelerate the adoption of modern farming technologies among producers to sustain output growth and improve efficiency across the value chain.
Coffee remains Ethiopia’s largest export commodity and a critical source of foreign exchange, making sector performance central to the country’s broader export-led growth strategy.
