Aviation Revenue Soars 242% as Ethiopia Pushes Sector Modernisation

Signaling renewed momentum for Ethiopia’s aviation sector, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) has reported a significant increase in both revenue and passenger traffic during the first half of the current fiscal year.

According to its mid-year performance briefing, the authority collected more than 3.4 billion birr, reflecting a 242 percent year-on-year increase. Operational execution reached 93 percent, underscoring improved service delivery and institutional performance.

Passenger volumes were a primary driver of growth. The authority reported handling 7 million international travelers and 1.69 million domestic passengers, achieving nearly 95 percent of planned targets. The figures point to sustained demand across key air corridors and domestic routes.

In addition to boosting air traffic, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) is undertaking structural reforms to enhance the sector’s long-term capacity. These initiatives include plans to:

• Decentralized international flights: Selected international flights will be moved to regional airports. This strategy aims to decrease congestion at the main Addis Ababa hub and promote equitable regional development.
• Enhance internal and regional connectivity: The authority is preparing to launch new inter-regional routes, which will improve air links both within Ethiopia and with neighboring markets.

Digital transformation remains central to the strategy. Expanded e-services and paperless systems are being introduced to modernise regulatory oversight, reduce processing times, and enhance operational transparency.

In parallel, lawmakers are reviewing a draft revision of Ethiopia’s aviation safety legislation. The proposed reform seeks to update a regulatory framework that has been in place for more than two decades, aligning oversight mechanisms with contemporary international standards.

The combination of higher passenger volumes, revenue growth, infrastructure planning, and regulatory reform suggests the aviation sector is entering a new phase of institutional strengthening and market expansion.
