Ethiopia’s Aviation Market Expands 31% as Africa Air Travel Set for Double-Digit Growth

Africa’s aviation sector is expected to experience strong growth in 2026, with new industry data pointing to rising passenger demand and expanding airline capacity across the continent. A report released by the African Travel & Tourism Association (ATTA) indicates that Africa’s air travel industry is entering a period of double-digit expansion, supported by tourism recovery, improving connectivity, and increased airline investment.

According to the report Africa in the Air – Aviation and Tourism Outlook 2026, international airline seat capacity in Africa has increased significantly, reflecting renewed confidence in the continent’s aviation market. Scheduled airline departure capacity reached approximately 182.4 million seats during the first ten months of 2026, representing a substantial rise compared with previous years. International routes accounted for the majority of this growth, with capacity climbing to 129.5 million seats, while domestic seat capacity also recorded modest growth.

The report highlights particularly strong momentum in East Africa, which has emerged as the fastest-growing aviation region on the continent. Airline seat capacity in the region expanded by more than 24 percent, driven by growing tourism demand and improved regional connectivity.

Among Africa’s major aviation markets, Ethiopia recorded one of the strongest expansions, with total seat capacity rising 31.2 percent to roughly 17 million seats. The growth places Ethiopia among the continent’s leading aviation hubs, alongside larger markets such as Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco.

Industry analysts attribute Ethiopia’s performance largely to the strategic role of Addis Ababa as a major regional transit hub and to the continued expansion of Ethiopian Airlines, which remains one of Africa’s largest and most connected carriers.

Future infrastructure investment, notably the planned Bishoftu International Airport near Addis Ababa, is expected to enhance Ethiopia’s aviation sector. This large-scale development aims to significantly increase passenger capacity within the next decade, bolstering the country’s goal of becoming a major global aviation hub.

Across the continent, aviation growth is closely tied to tourism development and broader economic recovery. As travel demand continues to rise, industry observers expect airlines and governments to increase investments in airport infrastructure, regional connectivity, and passenger services to accommodate future demand.

The ATTA report notes that the continued expansion of aviation networks could play an important role in boosting trade, tourism, and investment flows across Africa in the coming years.
