Bank of Abyssinia Joins ESX Main Market, Marking Milestone for Ethiopia’s Capital Market
Bank of Abyssinia (BoA) has officially joined the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) Main Market, becoming one of the country’s first publicly listed financial institutions and adding further momentum to Ethiopia’s newly established capital market.
The listing was marked with a ceremonial bell-ringing at the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, attended by representatives of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA), the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), government officials, investors, development partners, and the bank’s board and executive management.

The move represents another step in the gradual expansion of Ethiopia’s capital market, which officially commenced trading earlier this year. By listing on the ESX Main Market, Bank of Abyssinia becomes part of a growing group of companies expected to strengthen transparency, corporate governance, shareholder accountability, and long-term capital formation.
The listing follows the successful completion of the regulatory and listing process under the requirements of both the Ethiopian Securities Exchange and the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority.
Tilahun Esmael Kassahun (PhD), Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, described the listing as an important signal for Ethiopia’s evolving investment landscape.
“Every new listing strengthens the foundation of Ethiopia’s capital market. Bank of Abyssinia’s decision to list reflects confidence in the country’s market institutions and demonstrates how established Ethiopian companies are embracing higher standards of governance, transparency, and investor engagement,” he said.
Founded more than two decades ago, Bank of Abyssinia has grown into one of Ethiopia’s largest private commercial banks. Its admission to the exchange introduces another major financial institution into the country’s public securities market while broadening investment opportunities for shareholders and institutional investors.
The listing is also expected to support the development of a deeper, more liquid secondary market as Ethiopia continues to implement reforms aimed at diversifying sources of long-term finance beyond traditional bank lending.

Officials noted that expanding the number of listed companies will be essential to attracting both domestic and international investors and strengthening the role of capital markets in financing private-sector growth.
Bank of Abyssinia’s listing comes as Ethiopia continues building the institutional framework of its capital market following the establishment of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange and the licensing of investment banks, securities investment advisers, and other capital market service providers over the past year.
As additional companies enter the market, policymakers expect the exchange to play an increasingly important role in mobilizing long-term investment capital, improving corporate governance standards, and expanding financing options for Ethiopian businesses.
