Awash Bank Deposits Cross 500 Billion Birr
Awash Bank’s total deposits have surpassed 500 billion birr, marking a new milestone for the private lender and extending the growth recorded during the 2025/26 financial year.
The bank announced the achievement in a social media post, saying the milestone was celebrated at its headquarters in the presence of Board Chairman Gure Kumsa and senior management, with celebrations also held across its branches.

The latest figure represents an increase of at least 32.2 billion birr from the 467.8 billion birr in deposits Awash Bank reported at the close of the 2025/26 financial year on June 30, 2026. That is a minimum increase of approximately 6.9% in three months.
From 467.8 Billion to More Than 500 Billion Birr
The latest milestone follows substantial deposit growth during the previous financial year.
Awash Bank reported that deposits increased by 135 billion birr, or 41%, during 2025/26, reaching 467.8 billion birr by June 30, 2026.
| Period | Total deposits | Change |
| June 2025 | Approximately 332.8 billion birr | — |
| June 2026 | 467.8 billion birr | 41% annual growth |
| October 2026 | More than 500 billion birr | At least 6.9% growth since June |

Based on these figures, the bank’s deposit base has increased by more than 167 billion birr since June 2025.
A Growing Customer and Branch Network
At the end of the 2025/26 financial year, Awash Bank reported serving more than 17 million customers through 1,010 branches, more than 1,270 ATMs, and over 18,000 banking agents.
The bank also reported total assets of 622 billion birr and paid-up capital of 38.5 billion birr at June 30, 2026.
Its reported loan-to-deposit ratio was 58%, while its non-performing loan ratio remained below 2%.
The deposit milestone comes amid broader expansion in Ethiopia’s financial sector. The National Bank of Ethiopia reported that total financial-sector assets reached 6.89 trillion birr, while sector-wide deposits grew by nearly 38% during the latest reporting period.
Customer Deposits Drive the Milestone
Awash Bank CEO Tsehay Shiferaw attributed the bank’s 32-year growth journey to its customer-focused approach and credited customers for the latest achievement.
The milestone takes the bank beyond the half-trillion-birr threshold just months after it reported a 41% annual increase in deposits.
However, deposit growth alone does not establish profitability or overall financial performance. Those assessments also depend on lending, asset quality, funding costs, and other balance-sheet indicators.
For Awash Bank, crossing 500 billion birr in deposits marks another stage in its expansion, while the bank’s future performance will depend on how effectively it deploys the funds and manages the risks associated with continued growth.
