Six Ethiopian Banks Advance Toward Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) Listing as Capital Market Reforms Accelerate.
Ethiopia is taking a major step toward a market-driven financial system as six commercial banks advance plans to list on the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX). The move highlights growing investor confidence and the country’s efforts to strengthen domestic capital markets.
Several banks, including Awash Bank, Dashen Bank, Bank of Abyssinia, Abay Bank, Anbesa Bank, and Amhara Bank, are in the process of complying with new securities requirements. Notably, Dashen Bank and Bank of Abyssinia are further along, having already registered their securities and published their prospectuses. The remaining banks are currently finalizing their requirements with the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA).

The ESX has undergone swift development since its establishment in 2025. While equity trading is still limited, the strong focus on fixed-income markets is evident, with over one trillion birr in interbank transactions already recorded. Regulators consider the participation of commercial banks vital for boosting transparency, establishing market benchmarks, and opening up new channels for capital formation.
The broader goal is to mobilise long-term investment, attract both domestic and foreign investors, and diversify financing options beyond traditional bank lending. Currently, three companies are listed on the main equity market, with more than ten others preparing to join.
The development is being hailed as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s financial reform and economic growth strategy, despite challenges such as limited equity market activity and the ongoing need for greater investor education. Authorities are implementing measures to boost liquidity and market depth, including plans to introduce market indices by mid-2026 and to allow for foreign investor participation.
